Writing Prompts: Portentous

Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Day for the 7th of October was portentous. This is an interesting word, a foreshadowing term, warning of (usually bad) upcoming events. You might be familiar with the expression ‘portent of doom’. Portent and portentous are related words, so it will be of no great surprise as to portentous’ meaning.

Have I been in portentous circumstances? At this exact moment, I cannot think of any. That isn’t to say such circumstances haven’t come up, but I can’t really say I’ve had an experience of dire foreshadowing. The closest thing to such a moment I can think of, is when my mum phoned me, twice, and left a message. There was something in her voice that felt quite worrying, and when I called her back, it turned out my nan was quite ill. I don’t know if that truly classes as a portentous moment.

What about you, dear readers? What portentous moments have you had? Leave answers in the comments!
