Hmm. I don’t know. Could I be considered an authority on anything, though I dare say I am more knowledgeable than most of my circle of friends at bathroom design, and within the people I know, I am probably the biggest Nintendo fan. I could talk your ear off about Formula 1, or Disney stuff, and Star Trek is a topic I could waffle about for hours, but does that make me an authority? Should other people regard my opinions and views with reverence? No. I speak for myself and only myself. I may, depending on the subject, project confidence in my opinions, but I don’t pretend my opinions are worth more than anyone else’s (unlike some people I know). I am in no doubt that there are people out there with a lot more knowledge about bathrooms, Nintendo, sci-fi and pretty much anything I’m interested in.
On the other hand, I guess to customers asking about bathroom stuff, I am an authority, relative to them. It’s all relative, I suppose.
Live long enough, we all develop expertise in certain areas or with certain things. This expertise, of course, is not exhaustive. We just know more than the average person. We are the first person family and friends call when needing help with something we know a lot about. Hobbies we have passion for can turn into areas of expertise. Two things come to mind for me: Windows-based computers and photography. There are holes in my knowledge, but I know more than most people. As you know, I collect Lionel O Gauge trains. Fun hobby, to be sure, but I would never consider myself to have enough expertise to give people advice,
I view this sort of expertise different from being a recognized expert. I’m comfortable saying I’m an expert when it comes to Evangelicalism — particularly the Independent Fundamentalist Baptist church movement. I’ve been quoted in books, interviewed for podcasts, news stories, and print stories, given speeches, and been contacted by reporters for background information. One reporter repeatedly contacted me when he ran into IFB lingo he didn’t understand.
That’s my take ❤️❤️
Your take sir, is, as always, very, very good. One might say your expertise shines through 🙂
