Evangelicals Lack Empathy

I’ve slightly paraphrased the title of an excellent post by my pal, Bruce Gerencser. In his post, Bruce once again highlights the rabid fury of the evangelical, of the fundamentalist. Bruce has bravely battled these cruel, cowardly haters for years, and continues to do so, despite no end to the tirade being in sight. I often wonder if fundies like Victor Justice have actually taken the time to read the Bible properly. Are they even remotely familiar with passages like the following?

And if anyone would sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well. And if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who begs from you, and do not refuse the one who would borrow from you. You have heard that it is said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Matthew 5:40-43 ESV

“But I say to you who hear, love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you.”

Luke 6:27 ESV

“But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return, and your reward will be great.”

Luke 6:35 ESV

Here’s another that Victor and his ilk seem to have ignored:

“Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

Ephesians 4:32 ESV

So many times, I have seen fundies say they ‘speak the truth with love’, yet what ‘love’ is present in the hate-filled preaching of Tanner Furrh? His calls for the LGBT community to be put to death are exactly the sort of rhetoric that leads to tragedies like Club Q. With luck, his entire organisation is on a watch-list somewhere.

Does any of this firebrand preaching ever frighten the moderate Christians? I cannot say. It doesn’t seem to unnerve other fundies, who are more critical of the criticism of these angry and threatening pronouncements. David Thiessen weighed in, as he typically does, whilst continuing to refuse to use Bruce’s name (or my name, for that matter).

To quote Bruce first of all (his text shall be green):

I could spend several days posting hateful, violent quotes from Evangelical preachers. I routinely get nasty comments and emails from miscreants such as Victor Justice and Revial Fires — the latest in a long line of Christians who feel it their duty to harass and harm, not only me, but my family.

David’s ‘response’:

We find this article to be on the level of Bill Mahr when he made his religiosity documentary. Mr. Mahr only documented the extremists in the Christian world and did not take any time to be honest or objective.

The same is true for that article. The author only presents extremists and is not honest enough to point out all the honest, loving, true Christians wh do not act like he describes in that article.

What David forgets (heh) is that Bruce is not saying anything about moderate Christians! I have never known Bruce to write up posts that critique the moderate voices of Christians who do not engage in the furious, hate-filled writings that fundies indulge in. Bruce isn’t referencing good Christians because he’s discussing bad, extremists Christians! Therefore David’s protests are irrelevant. It’s a bit like me complaining that Bruce isn’t referencing crunchy peanut butter, in a post that’s all about smooth peanut butter. It’s a red herring argument from David.

It’s typical of David to see the hate-filled words that get aimed at Bruce, and then perform lots of mental gymnastics to play it all down.
