Writing Prompts: The Road Not Taken

Write about a time when you didn’t take action but wish you had. What would you do differently?

Ah, the road not taken. I can remark upon numerous occasions where I wish I had done something differently. I dare say we can all relate to this. Everyone will have come to a fork in the road, and everyone will have wondered what could have been if we went the other way.

The trouble is, we can tie ourselves in knots trying to figure out where we might be if we’d taken that other path. How much do we want to torment ourselves with the ‘what if’ question? What if I’d taken the job selling kitchens instead of selling sofas? I had the opportunity to take either, and I went for the sofa job. Was that the best move? I’ll never know; I cannot rewind time and start over, none of us can. Don’t get me wrong, reminiscing about the past is not automatically a bad thing, our memories serve as reminders and treasures, but we cannot change them, we can only move forward.

Is this something of a copout answer? Yes, yes it is. Simply put, I am not ready to go over all the times I wish I had spoken where instead I held my tongue. I don’t believe there’s much to gain from that exercise. Instead, I will pause to consider that every decision, every choice I’ve made, has led me here, and I am happy where I am.
