This is not a Game

So, we’ve had one weekend of nice weather. It’s been warmer, it’s been brighter, it’s generally been far more pleasant than it’s been lately – and about time too. However, in the middle of the covid-19 pandemic, the advice has been to maintain social distancing and avoid the temptation of gathering together. Unfortunately, a significant chunk of the UK population has decided this does not apply to them.

To that chunk, I say this: You are selfish, ignorant pricks. This is not a game. The more that people flout the rules now, the longer the lockdown continues. The longer it takes for shops and businesses to reopen (in fact, the longer this goes on, the more likely it is these businesses will fold). The longer lockdown continues, the more the economy hurts, with ramifications for all of us, but most importantly – the more people ignore the rules, more people will die.

That’s the stark consequence of all this. Some of us will catch this virus and shrug it off, but we’ll be capable of spreading it, and there are plenty of people who are vulnerable to this. In fact, it doesn’t matter, because fit and healthy people can and have died from this. The most common sense thing anyone can do right now is to obey the lockdown, instead of being stupid, and placing other lives at risk in the process.
