Continuing the theme of an alphabetical adventure through the mythical creatures of different countries, I thought I would settle on Belgium. There is a legend of the Mahwot, a lizard-like creature, purported to haunt the Meuse River, in the Ardennes.
The Mahwot is said to ensnare wayward children who stray too close to the water, and it is also said that frustrated mothers can summon the creature to discipline their children, should the need arise. Sightings of the Mahwot (usually an aquatic creature) are said to foretell death and war. I’ll confess to knowing absolutely nothing of this legend, and I am reluctant to regurgitate Wikipedia, so all I will say is that I am grateful this creature is a myth!
