If you’ve trawled the internet for as long as I have, you might have heard of Godwin’s Law. This is the theory that any internet argument or debate will inevitably lead to accusations of one party being a Nazi/Hitler. In some internet circles, referencing the Nazis leads to the declaration that Godwin’s Law has been invoked, and that particular debate/thread gets shut down.

The idea is popular, but is there any basis for it? The short answer is no. Researchers studying Reddit concluded there’s no regular frequency with which this ‘law’ is invoked. It’s one of those ‘internet legends’, of which are so many. To be honest, I hoped to have a lot more to say on this subject, but there isn’t that much out there to say. Things might be different if the ‘law’ was more widely used, but it’s not, so that’s that.
