If you could make your pet understand one thing, what would it be?
This is an intriguing and challenging prompt. There are lots of things I wish my cat, Castiel, would understand. I’d like him to grasp the concept that mewling at me to feed him when I am already emptying a sachet of food into his bowl is entirely redundant. I’d love for him to comprehend that as much as my wife and I love him, sitting on us at 1am whilst purring like a freight train is not acceptable behaviour. There’s his tendency to want to go outside to fight foxes or other cats; I would sorely like him to know this is not a good idea.
Perhaps the biggest thing I’d like him to know is that sitting outside our bedroom door, loudly licking himself at 3am, is an absolute no-no. He doesn’t realise how noisy his baths actually are.
