Meerkat Books: Write Through The Pain

Writing can be a fun exercise. When you are typing away, bringing characters to life and watching the wordcount grow, there is a great sense of satisfaction. You are creating a story, and developing an entire world for your characters to inhabit.

Now, you may be enjoying it all, but sooner or later, life will get in the way. Unless you are in a position to devote all your free time to writing, you will end up doing places or doing other things. Friends and family will rightly expect attention. If you are new to writing, then the chances are you’ll have a day job. In fact, you may have published a few books and still have a day job, in order to pay the bills.

All of that, plus variations in mood and health, can affect your focus. You may find yourself running out of creative juices. This is normal. You may also find that you can’t direct all your energy into the particular story you’re developing. In those circumstances, my advice, if you want to keep writing but can’t find the passion for your immediate project, is to try and write something else.

Perhaps you have some other ideas, or vague outlines, and maybe you’re not sure where to go with them, but some exploratory typing will help to keep your brain whirring. Who knows, in the process, you may jog loose some fresh concepts for your primary work-in-progress. You may find yourself moving from a standalone story to a series. The aim is to carry on writing, to keep the blood flow to your brain going, to keep your mind churning.

This may not work for you. You may actually need to totally disengage from writing, and dip into another activity. That’s fine. For me, it’s about not stopping, and fighting through writer’s block.
