I first started watching Formula 1 way back as a cub, in 1989 (well, that is my earliest memory of doing so). I vaguely recall seeing Nigel Mansell of Ferrari, racing in close quarters with a McLaren, possibly driven by Ayrton Senna. As I grew older and watched F1 more regularly, I came to regard Mansell as something of a hero, and I was certainly madly in love with these fast cars. Down the years I have enjoyed watching many races, and back in 2013 I was fortunate enough to see the British Grand Prix first-hand. I have seen some incredible, record-shattering triumphs, experienced moments of near-unparalleled controversy, and witnessed painful tragedies. For me, Formula 1 is an adrenaline rush.
Below, I share my opinions on some of the sport’s most legendary figures, offer up some thoughts on the various tracks of F1, present a brief history of motor-sport, and provide a little technical analysis on the sophisticated modern beasts F1 drivers ride. I hope you enjoy.
