Meerkat Books: Always Be Promoting
In an earlier Meerkat Books post, I warned of scammers who would aim to sell you impossible dreams about promotion and reach. This is certainly a problem within the author community, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t legitimate promotional and marketing services out there, if you are willing to pay. My advice is to do your homework, and seek out credible services. In the meantime, there are plenty of steps you can take to keep your books in the public eye, by following the principle of ABP: Always Be Promoting.
Promoting your work can feel like a slog. You may spend a lot of time putting together blog articles and social media posts, and you may feel like there’s very little return on that. Perhaps there won’t be, but what guarantees there won’t be is if you stop. If you are self-published, there is zero chance of your book gaining any momentum if you stop sharing details of it. Even with a publisher, if you don’t share your book across social media, you won’t gain a lot of traction.
I’d recommend being present on sites like Goodreads, and it’s worth setting up a Facebook page that relates to your brand. Be active on Twitter, and any other social media feed you feel comfortable using. If you are a member of any web forums, regardless of what they are about, add your book links to your signature. If you can, schedule posts about your posts and join groups on social media that are relevant to your material.
Basically, never stop talking about your books. Keep spreading the word. Always Be Promoting!
