Meerkat Books: Write What You Know

Most writers – not all, but most – will have built up a life of experiences and knowledge, before aiming to write. Whether the goal is fiction or non-fiction, this means that we all have something to draw from where writing and books are concerned.

For me, the two most obvious and natural fountains of inspiration are science fiction, and retail. My love of sci-fi has propelled me to publish sci-fi books, and to develop more in that arena. My experience of retail is extensive, but so far has not translated into a novel. This is due to change in the not-so-distant future.

I believe it matters to write what you know, because if you have lived any given experience, you are better placed to understand it and put it into words. Someone with no understanding of IT is not going to find it easy to write compelling, natural scenes about IT! This isn’t to say they can’t, but if you have spent several years working in such a field, it will feel natural and smooth.

Your life, your loves, your passions, even the things you hate or find annoying form a canvas from which you can weave a tapestry. Pour yourself onto the page!
