Meerkat Prompts: April Fool’s
Today is the 1st of April, known in some parts of the world as April Fool’s Day, where it is customary to play fun little pranks and jokes on one another. The scale and sophistication of these jokes varies, with broadcasters and companies sometimes getting in on the act. There’s a lengthy global history behind April Fool’s Day, with suggested origins going back centuries, all across Europe.
Am I a big proponent of April Fool’s Day? Not usually. I am more likely to fall for the joke than to execute a successful prank! For example, had I been around during the BBC’s now-infamous Spaghetti Harvest prank of 1957, I would have almost certainly fallen for it! The presence of these large-scale, media-led activities has grown down the years, with a lot of businesses now using April Fool’s Day as a promotional tool (take train company LNER, and their ‘beauty’ service!). It is an opportunity to find some light-hearted entertainment, and some fun, in a world that seems increasingly insane.
