Meerkat Prompts: Halloween
As today is the 31st of October, it feels fitting to offer up some Halloween hi-jinks! My daughter loves Halloween, and has done since she was little. I have some great pictures of her in a little witch’s outfit, holding a small broom!
Down the years I’ve gone out trick-or-treating with her, and we’ve usually had a lot of fun. The challenge has been in coming up with creative and entertaining costumes. The standard fare doesn’t interest me, so over the past few years I have been a dinosaur, a meerkat, and Bowser. This year, I am donning my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles onesie, and will be wandering up and down the streets in that. It has the added benefit of being warm!
The occasion is, generally speaking, quite a colourful one, and it does tend to bring out a certain level of imagination (well, it does in parts of my patch, not in others). Of course, it is important to consider a few rules. My daughter and I will only knock on doors where there are Halloween decorations displayed. It’s clear that these people are participating, and they have advertised this to the world. Houses without decorations are a no-go, and it’s important to respect that.
I sometimes wonder what it would be like to experience Halloween in the USA, where it tends to be on a grander scale than here. Mind you, it’s a more firmly-established tradition in that neck of the woods.
There’s one final thought to ponder. What will the weather do? Trick-or-treating is alright if it’s dry, but if it starts to pour down with rain, I for one am less inclined to be outside! As far as this year goes, it appears dry at the moment, but will it stay that way?! I guess I better offer a sacrifice to Count Dracula, perform a witch’s spell, and pray to the nearest werewolf for good luck!
I’ll leave you with some pictures of past Halloween exploits, for which I am truly, truly sorry.
