Meerkat Prompts: What do I wish I had started sooner?

Regrets? I have a few, like anyone else. There are things I wish I had done or started sooner in life. The two main ones would be getting tattoos, and writing books.

You might think there’s little equivalence between the two. Surely writing books is more rewarding, right? In a lot of ways it certainly is, and I definitely wish I had started sooner. Who knows where I might be if I’d been able to motivate myself better, and put pen to paper earlier in my life. I did scratch around the edges of the idea, albeit largely via writing awkward Star Trek vs Star Wars fan fiction, but I didn’t dedicate time to an original project until 2019, at when I was nearly forty.

I guess it’s never too late, but if I had started earlier… well, who knows? Then again, torturing myself with what ifs isn’t going to move me forward.

I didn’t get my first tattoo until I was 29. I have since gone on to get 11 more. Had I been a bit braver, I might have gotten some sooner. A part of me was worried about the pain factor, which ultimately was me being a wuss, and what I discovered is that whilst tattoos do hurt – it’s a needle jabbing your skin, after all – it’s a weirdly satisfying pain, and it’s even more glorious to see the tattoo take shape. There’s a post-tattoo glow, where you feel very happy. Had I know that in my early 20s, I might have a few more by now.

Still, again, there isn’t much point in gripping regret tight. I am where I am, in terms of both my book exploits and my tattoos. Life is too short to dwell on what might have been!
