The title of this post may seem harsh, but I cannot think of a more apt way to describe people who are coming out across social media and saying, in all seriousness, ‘I will not accept medical treatment from anyone but the white doctor’.
You may be thinking ‘Ben, that’s so ludicrous that no one is saying that’. Well, check out this Sky News report from earlier this month. It’s happening, and cases of it happening are on the rise. Not only is this clear and overt racism, it is also utterly stupid, hence the title of this post.
If you happen to go to your GP or end up down your local hospital because you need some form of medical care, is the appearance of your doctor really of such importance that it will override common sense, and lead to you not getting your issue looked at? Because such ignorant, casual racism can lead to you not being cared for. What is so critical about the skin colour of the nurses seeing to your welfare that you would say ‘no, you cannot help me’?
As I have previously mentioned, the doctors and nurses and surgeons that tended to my daughter have been from various backgrounds. Not once have I prejudged them. It serves no reasonable purpose. All of them have worked incredibly hard to make sure my daughter has emerged from the other side of a scary situation in the best possible way. That is what medical professionals do, regardless of their race, creed, faith or gender. It would never occur to me to refuse treatment on those grounds, and you have to be an idiot to do so.
I can’t believe we’re in the 21st Century and still contending with this crap. Enough is enough!
