The Thinking ‘Kat: Signs of a Spine?

Might we be seeing the unthinkable unfolding in the USA? Republicans – usually blindly loyal to Trump – are becoming increasingly fed up with the Dear Leader. Some have vented their anger over the administration’s handling of the Epstein files, and it seems others have taken a stand at plans that might have rewarded the Jan 6th insurrectionists with money.

Trump wanted to create a slush fund, claiming it was there to help people he alleged had suffered political persecution from Democrats. Instead, it seems some of the fund would benefit people who sought to interfere with the results of the 2020 elections. In case anyone needs reminding, people died as a result of the insurrectionists and their actions. Between the possibility of rewarding rioters, the Epstein files, spiralling gas prices and the unpopular, costly war with Iran, Trump’s approval rating is plummeting, and some Republicans are undoubtedly worried about the impact on them.

Let’s be clear, those who are now publicly venting their fury are not doing so out of altruism. They are concerned about their political futures. To be fair, if this was unfolding with a Democrat president, their motives would be the same. Fear of collapse in the upcoming mid-terms is driving some Republicans to stand up to the Dear Leader, instead of meekly following one bad decision after another. Still, fear can be a powerful motive.

It remains to be seen if this attitude at the top will filter down. Will Trump’s MAGA fans see the wood for the trees if Republican senators and members of Congress continue to voice their disapproval of Trump’s actions and policies? Might the conservative base that has so blindly worshipped Trump without so much as a whisper of questioning pause, and reflect, and wonder? Hope springs eternal!
