Meerkat Prompts: Footy Scran

Footy Scran refers to both a popular Twitter account, and a general trend of evaluating and sharing details of football stadium food. After recently watching a TV series hosted by the ever-likeable Adam Richman related to this very subject, I thought I would indulge my tastebuds – metaphorically at least – by thinking about, and drooling over, the various culinary concoctions of England’s football clubs.

The dining experience is not why fans flock to stadiums around the country, but down the years fans have come to expect better offerings than a burnt hotdog or an undercooked burger. The clubs have realised there is money to be made from upping their kitchen game, and now a lot of clubs offering some incredible options, be they fine dining, or elevated forms of traditional football stadium grub.

Of course, the quality varies, and part of that is down to money. The bigger clubs can afford to invest in exclusive restaurants and improvements to their menus. Smaller clubs have to be more careful. Still, this hasn’t stopped some of the smaller sides from providing what certainly look like some delicious options.

How about something framed as slightly more exotic?

Some of these meals bring forth an interesting point. Football stadium food still encompasses the typical fish and chips, burgers and pies, but it’s also branched out. Dishes inspired from overseas have hit the menu. Football fans – some of them anyway – have developed a taste for the exotic.

The evolution of football food is quite remarkable. Adam Richman toured the country to sample various foods around the stadiums, but I would be intrigued to visit some of the stadiums themselves, and try out what they have to offer. It would be a very bad idea for my waistline, but if the food tastes as good as it looks, it would be enormously satisfying!
