Meerkat Books: Books Reviews: Destiny’s Boot (The Barsian Job Book 1)
One of the quirks about this book is that I got a free pen out of it! Not just any pen, a pen that doubles up as a stylus for my phone. I was most pleased by this!
Enough about the pen (which is a lovely purple colour and easy to write with). No, seriously, enough about the pen. What about Destiny’s Boot, by FJ Mitchell? Well, it’s certainly a quirky boot book, filled with vibrant characters, representing a variety of fantastical species. It blends magic and mayhem with mysterious pasts, dodgy contracts and classic piracy.
The eclectic characters include a captain who is outwardly jovial but also takes his loyalty to his crew very seriously, an avian best described as a kick-ass parrot with a strong faith, and a deeply close relationship between a woman and the demon who owns her soul and lives in a sword. Throw in pretty much every other fantasy creature there is into this mix, along with a deadly quest, and you have yourself the ingredients of a page-turner. I certainly couldn’t put Destiny’s Boot down, and it made perfect sense to ask for the sequel for Christmas. I loved this book, and I look forward to the third part!
