Meerkat Books: Book Reviews: The Jake Cutter Conspiracy

Sometimes you read a book that is perfectly pleasant (in a gritty, sci-fi sort of way), and the more you read it, the more you are drawn to believe a certain fate is in store for certain characters. Let me assure you that this can be an elaborate trap. The Jake Cutter Conspiracy is one such book. As you follow the experience of Jake, a scapegoat for pretty much everyone, you don’t see the snare that’s been set.

Without divulging too much more on that particular element, let me instead say that The Jake Cutter Conspiracy is a classic underdog story. I don’t like bullies, be they individuals or organisations, and so I instinctively appreciated Jake and his character, faced with one cruel hardship after another, none of it due to his own actions, yet ultimately facing it all down with a dogged determination that proves how indomitable the human spirit can be. Jake is relatable and likeable, two rather important qualities for drawing a reader in, and keeping them invested.

The other major hook with this book is a lived-in universe, complete with grime, crime and sleaze. There’s a robust cast of various, and varied, alien species to keep things colourful and creative. Author R. Kyle Hannah also keeps the story moving. He tells the story through the actions and antics of the characters and the setting, sweeping the reader along with Jake as he hurtles toward his destiny. It all adds up to an enjoyable read, and an absolute suckerpunch of an ending!
