The Meerkat of Sci-Fi & Fantasy: Star Trek: Starfleet Academy
Star Trek shows have taken a variety of forms down the years. From the vibrant colours of the original 1960s show, to the clinical, clean look of The Next Generation, on to the darker, grittier tones set by Discovery, and the renewed optimism of Strange New Worlds, Star Trek has been continually evolving.
The latest step in this evolution is Starfleet Academy, which has so far been a delightfully upbeat show. Now, we’re only four episodes in, so there is certainly time for that to change, but so far it has offered a vision of a future where, in the wake of hardship and grief, people from disparate backgrounds can find common ground, learn how to function as a team, and grow as both individuals and a community.
Opening the door to new experiences, to learning, to growing, whilst also being there to support and help each other… well, that’s the very essence of Star Trek. Refusing to give way to fear, and fighting to build a better world, it’s a message that the world needs. With luck, Starfleet Academy will continue to provide this message, and continue to do so in this bold, exciting and truly fun way. I cannot wait to see what comes next!
