The Meerkat Q&A, Question Three: Pineapple on Pizza?

Time for a surprisingly divisive question. For many years the Hawaiian pizza (which ironically originated in Canada) has been a staple of certain pizzerias, yet the concept of it can lead to some humorous revulsion. You see, the Hawaiian hosts pineapple, which as you know is a sweet citrus fruit. Does sweet citrus fruit have any place on a savoury dish, sitting alongside melted cheese, and sometimes ham and bacon?

Despite the concept initially seeming unpleasant, it all comes down to your personal flavour mileage. I for one actually don’t mind pineapple on pizza. Sure it could be seen as a little unusual, but there are plenty of other marriages between savoury and sweet. Candied bacon, for example. A lot of Chinese food has sweet and sour elements. Sweet chilli sauces and dips are very popular too.

This notion even gets flipped around. Chocolate needs no introduction as a sweet food item, yet in recent years it’s been combined with chilli, which is a combination I do not care for! Coffee and chocolate are also said to go together, though again, I am not fond of that.

What about you? Pineapple on pizza, sweet combined with savoury? Where do you draw the line?
