Meerkat Prompts: What Should Everyone Know?
A good question, and there are several potential answers! My first instinct was to suggest that anyone who is physically able to do so should learn how to swim. I think swimming is a skill worthwhile knowing for a number of reasons. It’s a good form of exercise, it can be fun, and it could even save your life! However, I wonder if the prompt is getting at that sort of knowledge, or if it wants us to consider more ethereal ideas?
After all, there is quite the difference between knowing how to make a cup of tea, and knowing how to read and write! There’s also a fair bit of difference between knowing how to read and write, and understanding concepts of kindness and compassion. I can certainly maintain there are practical skills everyone should have (in this modern world, computer skills would count among them), but in terms of true knowledge, or perhaps true wisdom? Well, everyone will reflect upon those concepts a little differently.
If I were to venture an opinion, I think the human race would greatly benefit if everyone knew to have more empathy. The world can be a very cold, unfeeling place, with people reduced to numbers or stereotypes. It often seems that tribalism is on the rise. Somewhere along the line, we have forgotten that we are all human, and allowed the powers that be to divide us. Knowing to reverse this trend would go a long way to creating a better world.
