The Spider-Man: No Way Home Trailer

Well, for those of you who have an interest in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and who have been following the intense rumours around the multi-verse notion, the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer finally answers some questions, though as is to be expected from a teaser trailer, a great many new questions have been raised. Just why did Dr Strange help Parker so happily, despite the dangers of the spell he cast?

Could it be Strange is an imposter? Mephisto, a Skrull, perhaps a variant? We do see a scene in the trailer where Strange and Spidey seem to be facing off whist riding trains that are rising into the sky. Then there’s a moment where Strange is separating Parker from his body, for as-yet unknown reasons. Then again, could it be Strange feels a kinship with Parker, over their shared experiences in Infinity War, and maybe a measure of responsibility for costing Parker his mentor Tony Stark? It might also be that Strange believes he can wield this potentially very dangerous spell, despite Wong’s advice. After all, arrogance is one of Strange’s characteristics.

In any event, Parker starts yapping during the spell and disrupts it. Cue chaos, including (so it would seem) the arrival of Electro (though we don’t specifically see him), Doc Ock (who we most definitely see), and an appearance of one of the original Green Goblin’s pumpkin bombs, along with a familiar, manicial laugh. It certainly seems as though the multi-verse is happening!

As a piece of pure speculation, we had a moment in the Loki show where He Who Remains mentions crossing the point of no return, and the various timelines he’d worked to wrap together begin to diverge. Could it be the point of divergence is Strange’s spell?

Could it all be a bluff? Marvel have sold us the dummy before. Could it be that the villains that are seemingly from another universe are merely the existing forms of these villains in the MCU? Granted, that feels unlikely, but the possibility can’t be completely ignored.

Finally, the trailer doesn’t reveal the presence of either Toby Maguire’s Spider-Man or Andrew Garfield’s version of the character, though in fairness a short teaser was never likely to show us such revelations. We’ll have to wait for another trailer (or perhaps even for the film itself) before we learn if they’re involved. In any event, the hype for the film just went up a notch.
