This is it. The grand finale to the sequel trilogy is almost upon us. In true geekdom fashion, my wife and I already have tickets booked and now all we can do is wait. The Rise of Skywalker… What can we expect?
It goes without saying that there will possibly be spoilers (and those who haven’t seen the trailers, there will definitely be spoilers), so if you wish to avoid any such things, please stop reading.
For those of you who aren’t fussed, carry on!
So the imagery from the trailer suggests the Resistance has grown in strength, since being reduced to a mere handful of insurgents in The Last Jedi. Poe and Finn appear to be leaders and Rey is, as a Jedi, the focal point for hope and inspiration, but she is still looking for those things for herself. The Resistance is fighting the First Order and things are pretty tough.
There are familiar returning faces. Carrie Fisher makes her final appearance, via the use of unused The Force Awakens footage. Billy Dee Williams reprises his role as Lando, Mark Hamill is back for one last bow, and Ian McDiarmid is also back as Emperor Palpatine – which is my single greatest gripe with this movie.
The sequel trilogy is about Rey, Finn, Poe, Ren, Hux and the other new characters. Naturally, there had to be a connection to the past, for the events of the original trilogy were epic and would have an effect on the future. However, whilst the original characters that we know and love should have their moments, the new characters should have their moments to step into the forefront of the story, and bringing back Palpatine as a major antagonist feels like it’s robbing the new characters of their crowning moment. Admittedly we have had the barest snippets of clips and news, so this all be handled in the best way, but try as I might, I cannot get excited about The Rise of Skywalker, not in the way I was anticipating the previous two installments.
I’d love to wrong. I’d love for this film to be the send off these characters deserve. Fingers crossed.
