It greatly saddens me when people in positions of power and privilege abuse said power and privilege. Elon Musk, owner of Twitter, is one such person, and he has been steadily revealing to the world who he really is. Elon Musk, ladies and gentlemen, is, in this meerkat’s humble opinion, a deceiver.
Take his above tweet. Here, Mr Musk is claiming – deceitfully I might add – that people in the UK are being arrested for social media posts. The implication behind Musk’s statements is that the UK government is indulging in wanton censorship of opinions it does not like. Leave it to Musk to lack context, and indeed decency, in his statements.
The reality? People have been arrested for inciting violence and racism, among other unpleasantries. Social media has become an easy way for people to rapidly share misleading arguments and dishonest claims, used to manipulate others into a frenzy. We saw this with the recent rioting from the far-right, which used social media as a means to spread false information about the Southport suspect. A consequence of this ill-conceived abuse of free speech was that people’s businesses were senselessly trashed. People were hurt in all the violence. What I have to wonder is why Elon Musk seemingly has no regard for these consequences, and thinks people should be be free to say what they want, without consequence.
