Spider-Man 3

Right, so… what’s going on here?

I don’t normally go into detail about upcoming movies, but the third Spider-Man MCU entry is shaping up to be a particularly ambitious film, if all the rumours are true.

If the stories are true (and at least two of the casting rumours appear to have come true), we’re going to have Tom Holland’s MCU Spider-Man joined by Toby Maguire’s Peter Parker and Andy Garfield’s interpretation of the webslinger. Jamie Foxx is set to appear as Electro (who he played in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 alongside Garfield) and Alfred Molina is set to return as Doc Ock (his character from Maguire’s Spider-Man 2). Benedict Cumberbatch is set for at least a cameo as Dr Strange, and following on from the as-yet untitled Spider-Man 3 will be Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, so it will interesting to see what the fallout is from universes colliding via Spidey.

Also feeding into The Multiverse of Madness is the Wandavision TV show, though I have no idea what, if any, impact the show will have on Spider-Man 3.

Regarding the film itself, the danger is that it will be too overloaded with characters. This was an issue for Maguire’s third film and it complicated Garfield’s second entry. Then again, Marvel have experience with ensemble movies, and Sony pulled it off with their Into the Spiderverse film. At present, this is the most exciting MCU Phase Four prospect, and given the film is planned for release in 2021, we might get a trailer sooner than we think.
