In part, there are two prior parts to this series, found here and here. In the wake of continued direct experiences with the NHS, I have to reassert what I referred to in parts one and two.

It remains baffling to me that people still oppose universal healthcare that is free at point of use. The motives behind this involve a misunderstanding of ideology, and a certain measure of what I have to bluntly call brainwashing. In some parts of the world, most notably the USA but not limited to there, there are people who believe any measure taken to actually help people is somehow part of an evil socialist plot to destroy civilisation. It seems if there’s no option to drive people into crippling debt, it’s somehow unfair.

In other words, won’t somebody think of the shareholders?!

If quality healthcare is only possible via risking crippling financial debt, then that is truly an unfair system. I do not know how I would have coped if the only means to get through my daughter’s turbulent year had come at a cost. For those experiencing this sort of thing to a far worse degree, the notion of having to spend tens of thousands of pounds (if not more) seems unimaginable, yet there are people who think that is entirely reasonable, just so a faceless rich fat cat can have another yacht.

What makes this all rather tragically ironic, is that it’s those who preach compassion, mercy and justice the loudest, who are most blind to the cruelty of the for-profit healthcare model they defend so much. They are more concerned about the plight of the wealthy classes (who do not care at all about those who worry so much for them), than about people in dire need. When I was in London, I saw people – children – going through cancer treatment. Would it be charitable or merciful to saddle their parents with obscene expenses, whilst also dealing with the stress, turmoil and fear of that?

If anyone can defend that position, then by all means, drop a comment or link me to your answer if you serve one elsewhere. I’d be fascinated to know what you have to say.

Back to The Thinking ‘Kat

Previously, I’d spoken about universal healthcare (well, written about it, if we’re to be pedantic).
