I like to leave for any given destination with plenty of time to spare. If a train is due at 12, I want to be at the station at 11:45 at the latest, in case of queues or complications with people and technology. I don’t like winging it, and I don’t care for dawdling. If there is somewhere I need to be, I’ll aim to be early, because any disruption means aiming to arrive just on time will become arriving late, and I hate arriving late.

Most airlines have a rule about arriving three hours before the flight, in order to navigate check-in and security. I am definitely on board with that. My dad and my brother share this trait, and we all generally arrive to airports before check-in has even opened. The men in my family don’t like to be late, so we overcompensate!

Of late (heh), my YouTube feed has been recommending old episodes of Airline. This was a series about the experiences of passengers and staff of Easyjet, set across several UK airports. Sometimes I’ve had a bit of sympathy for passengers who’ve ended up missing their flights, but on other occasions, I’ve been left scratching my head at how people have ended up missing their flight, and then reacted as though their poor timekeeping is everyone else’s fault. If you’re relying on public transport to get to an airport, check it thoroughly for delays and issues, and maybe leave an extra half-hour to an hour early, just in case. I know, I know, that isn’t always feasible, but if it is, I’d highly recommend it.

The same goes with any car journey. Don’t assume time and location of travel will ensure an easy, smooth trip. Be prepared for traffic. Accidents can create chaos in an instant.

I guess my hope is that people will exercise some common sense when it comes to travelling. If more people did, there’d be a lot less stress at stations and airports!

Back to Meerkat Prompts

What’s one piece of travel advice you always follow?
