The photo of the World Trade Center, as it was so many years ago (taken by By Jeffmock – Own work, Public Domain, https:\/\/commons.wikimedia.org\/w\/index.php?curid=2188597<\/a>) is haunting, when you pause and reflect on what happened on the 11th of September, 2001. That day is etched into the collective consciousness of those who witnessed what happened, whether they were there, or watching on TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nearly three thousand people died in the attacks, which used planes as weapons, destroying the World Trade Center, as well as damaging the Pentagon. A fourth plane was brought down when passengers fought to retake it from the hijackers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There must be millions of lines of text about that fateful day. It shaped and redirected global action and conversation, and some of those changes have certainly not been for the better. It could be said that the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq would never have happened if not for the 9\/11 attacks. Who know what other dominos were set in motion due to what happened. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is certainly true is that what happened had deep, painful and lasting consequences on the families of those killed and injured. In the subsequent conflicts that 9\/11 triggered, scores more have also suffered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m not going to fill this post with politics. There’s a time and a place for that. Today is about reflection and remembrance. Those who perished should be remembered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As to my personal memories, I was at work at my local magistrate’s court when word broke of what had happened. It seemed surreal at first, because surely something like that was not possible? Planes did not crash into skyscrapers, least of all twice. Instead, as the news footage poured in, the horrible reality became clear. It was heartbreaking, and it still is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here’s to hoping that no one has to bear witness to anything like this, ever again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
