One of the big rules introduced into the Star Trek<\/em> franchise is the Prime Directive. The Prime Directive is essentially a non-interference policy with less-developed worlds, designed to prevent technological, cultural and social contamination of planets that are not deemed advanced enough for first contact with the Federation. Another way of looking at it is that the Federation doesn’t want to unduly influence the natural development of any given world, especially worlds that have not developed interstellar travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Prime Directive sounds reasonable enough, though it serves as an interesting philosophical argument in Star Trek<\/em>. There are occasions where it got violated, and exploration as to the reasoning made for important plot points. An intriguing discussion opened up on the TrekBBS board<\/a>, and it got me interested in writing this post. Are there circumstances where the Prime Directive, for all its well-meaning intent, is a callous form of evading responsibility?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking some of the examples presented in the thread, it’s hard to argue that the Prime Directive should be strictly adhered to. It would be one thing to look at a civilisation that was undergoing social strife, and drop weapons\/technology onto it. We’d certainly have serious reservations about doing that here on earth! However, saving a primitive civilisation from a natural disaster would be a different matter. If we had the power to stop a volcanic eruption from wiping out half a world’s population, or if we could shield a planet from a deadly solar flare, and we did nothing, what might that say?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’d rather save that civilisation and give it the opportunity to grow and develop, than sit and watch as it was destroyed. I don’t have a problem with that, and that is where the moral messaging of non-interference, as presented in The Next Generation<\/em>, sometimes falls down. There were times in the show where commanders expected their officers to do nothing and let people die. It certainly generated conversation points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thread sort of sums it up as a ‘what would Kirk do?’ versus ‘what would Picard do?’ Picard was, particularly in TNG<\/em>, often quite strict, and a stickler for the rules and principles of the Federation. Kirk would tend to take each scenario as it came, and he was quite prepared to question the rules if he believed them to be incapable of handling said scenario. I certainly think there is merit to Kirk’s approach; not all rules in society have strong moral foundations. Indeed, there is that classic expression, ‘rules are made to be broken’. A powerful case can be made for the Prime Directive being one of those rules, at least in some circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
