Somewhat related to the concept of writing about what you know<\/a>, is the notion of writing about what you love. What motivates you in life? You may well find it’s a good starting point to write about something, if you are inclined to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I referred to sci-fi as something I know; it is also something I love<\/strong>. I am a huge geek, and proud of it. It provides enormous inspiration and I find myself taking further inspiration from each new film, book and TV show I watch in the genre. There are countless amazing characters who provide intrigue, love, joy, sadness and even anger, and they all help to form a tapestry of story-telling that makes sci-fi so much more than merely ‘lasers and explosions’.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because I love sci-fi, I write about it. My stories are rooted in this template. I could attempt to write a love story set in 1930s New York, but I know I wouldn’t be able to do that justice. I could try to write about the tensions within a rugby team as they fight to win a championship, but that’s not what I am passionate about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Writing about what we love is so much easier, and more natural, than writing about anything else. If we are engrossed by a subject, we will pour ourselves onto the page, hopefully offering the sort of vibrancy in our words that we feel in our hearts. This has certainly worked for me, and I can’t think of going about my writing in any other way. We’re all different, so maybe this suggestion doesn’t work for you. Maybe you prefer to push yourself and move outside of your comfort zone. That’s great if you can do it. If not, there’s nothing wrong with the comfort zone!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
