June is Pride Month, when the LGBT community steps forward, and the tremendous progress towards equality is recognised, whilst the challenges are acknowledged. The odds are pretty good that the various companies supporting Pride will drop that support the moment the calendar hits the 1st of July, so it may be argued their colourful gestures are performative, but at least something will happen in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among the things to happen in June will be an increase in hand-wringing from the bigot brigade. There are a great many people who still resent the LGBT community for daring to exist, much less exist openly. They will no doubt pipe up with their usual messages of sin and evil, convieniently forgetting that most members of the LGBT community aren’t religious, and won’t give a crap about sin or evil, at least, not in the ways the ultra-religious zealots present evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What is more offensive? Two men or two women holding hands and kissing in the street, or the Epstein cover-up? What angers you more, gay marriage, or the systemic abuse of children by pastors and preachers? What boils your blood the most, adoption rights for same-sex couples or the problems of greed and poverty faced by millions around the world? If you think the former examples even remotely have equivalence with the latter ones, you need to re-examine your priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Alas, I suspect a lot of people will continue to draw false equivalence between the LGBT community and other stuff. Falsehoods are the modus operandi of hate. With luck, the haters will grow more insignificant with each passing year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
