By Reading Tom https://flickr.com/photos/16801915@N06/49445780187

Euston – the original, beautiful Victorian station – opened in 1837 to act as the London terminus of the London & Birmingham Railway (which was absorbed into the London & Northwestern Railway in 1846). As was the norm in the Victorian era, rail companies competed to gave grandeoise terminals, and the L&BR was no different. Euston featured a large, grand arch as the centrepiece of the station, aiming to welcome passengers to London in glamour and style. Euston was also built with spare capacity, owing in part to a deal with the Great Western Railway, whereby trains from the Great Western Mainline would also run into Euston. These plans never materialised, but it did mean Euston had been future-proofed.

Well, it had been future-proofed for a time. The extra capacity was swiftly gobbled up, and Euston expanded, but the need for more platforms continued to grow. By the 1930s the station – now under the remit of the London, Midland & Scottish Railway – was under serious consideration for being rebuilt. World War II interrupted the plans of the LMS, but post-war, nationalised British Rail retained the desire to do something about Euston.

That ‘something’ was the wholesale destruction of the original Victorian architecture, with the new Euston becoming a bland block of masonry. Was it more efficient? Possibly, though even this was doubtful, and Euston quickly earned a reputation for being among the worst stations in all of Europe. However, the tragedy to befall it led to passionate conservation efforts to protect other threatened London terminals, such as St Pancras. In that sense, Euston has had a lasting, positive legacy, even if inadvertently.

Euston is changing yet again, as it forms the London terminus of High Speed 2 services to Birmingham. As such, there are new platforms under construction, and who knows what other changes are needed to ensure the station operates smoothly. Whether or not these changes will also see signs of character and grace added to the design is anyone’s guess. I suspect we won’t ever get to see Euston somehow restored to its former glory, but I suppose there is always hope.

Back to The Meerkat of Trains!

Euston station, the London terminus of the West Coast Mainline, is a cautionary tale of what happens when bureacracy overtakes artistry.
