Halloween 2019

Let it said that my daughter marches to the beat of her own drum. For Halloween she declared she wanted to go as a chicken. Because daddy would be going with her, daddy was required to go as a chicken as well.

Last night she was very excited. To her, Halloween is a bit like Christmas. She loves the slightly macabre. Stuff like The Addams Family, Coraline, etc, is right up her street. In fact, I’d say she’s probably more excited for Halloween than Christmas – as I said, she marches to her own beat!

Which is brilliant. She is who she is, and she is not afraid to be who she is. Hence daddy and daughter walking down the street in chicken outfits. It drew some intrigued looks – I think people were impressed – and I loved sharing that experience with her. I loved that she loved it. She was looking forward to it so much that as soon as I got home I was ushered into getting changed so we could get out the door and begin our adventure.

I don’t have photos (sadly), but quite a few houses in the area were decked out for the occasion. It’s become a British pastime over the last ten-fifteen years, as opposed to something we pay only cursory attention to. We’re still some way behind our American cousins in terms of enthusiasm, but as an event, it’s definitely grown. The timing of this is perfect for my daughter, who has taken to it like a duck to water.

We shouldn’t forget the impressive quantity and variety of sweets we gathered as well! My lunchbox may end up with a few sweet treats throughout November!
