After six years, it’s finally here! The sequel to the 2013 smash hit has landed, but will it have the same impact?
The original Frozen has become a huge cultural icon. The songs – in particular Let it Go – have resonated in the public consciousness, in much the same way that the Disney films of the Renaissance era did. The film itself has become of the most successful movies of all time, with lovable characters that have stuck with us – such as Olaf the snowman, Sven the reindeer, and of course, Queen Elsa and Princess Anna. Six years have passed, and the film’s writers and producers have proven aware of this, with a sequel that acknowledges this through a variety of means. Frozen 2 is arguably a bit more mature, explores the theme of getting older, and pokes fun at this a little too.
I’m not going to give away spoilers, but this film is very much about the sisters, Anna and Elsa. This is their story, it builds upon the first movie in an organic way, and it presents to young girls and women in the audience two different but strong female characters – both leaders in their own way. There are laughs to be had, there is emotion too – this is a solid piece of film making. It expands the Frozen universe, draws to a satisfying conclusion, and brings you plenty of smiles along the way. I can’t say if it’s as good as the first movie (which it also sends up on a few, laugh-out-loud occasions), as for me, the verdict is still out on that front. I think, overall, when I ponder the best Disney films of 2019 (of which there are many, and there is still one more to go), Frozen 2 deserves to be up there.
