F1 2018 Round 6 – Monaco

MonteCarlo

I begin this post with an apology. I caught the highlights of the Spanish Grand Prix but never got around to writing a proper review of it as, to be frank, it wasn’t that interesting a race (Romain Grosjean’s spectacular first lap spin and subsequent three-car crash notwithstanding). It was possibly a key turning point in the battle for the 2018 titles, with Mercedes dominating and Ferrari struggling a little, as tyres were redesigned and teams brought upgrades. Lewis Hamilton’s win and Valtteri Bottas’ second place were a much-needed boost in the wake of early Ferrari dominance.

The early story from Monaco is one of Red Bull dominance. Daniel Ricciardo has put his car on pole, vital on a track where position is key. This low-speed, high downforce circuit naturally suits the Red Bulls, though Max Verstappen made yet another error to cost him the chance of lining up alongside his teammate, instead consigned to starting at the very back. Ricciardo is instead joined by Sebastian Vettel, who will be eager to gain the ground he lost to Hamilton. Hamilton himself is third on the grid and his chances of adding to his two Monaco victories seem low.

This might be a dull race. Equally, it might give Red Bull and Ricciardo a massive lift.
